Shoraku
A moment to unwind in the city.
Higashi-Nippori's Shoraku is beloved for its thick ankake crab fried rice, spicy Bakudan fried rice, savory liver stir-fries, and classic soy-sauce ramen.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When it reaches the table, the sheer volume of the ankake crab fried rice commands attention, its thick sauce poured generously right to the brim. Dipping a spoon reveals a rich, piping-hot gravy imbued with the aroma of crab and the mild sweetness of egg, smoothly coating every grain of wok-tossed rice underneath. It is the signature dish that draws many to Shoraku, a neighborhood diner hanging its noren curtain in the residential quarter of Higashi-Nippori.
Rice offerings don't stop there. Choices range from Bakudan fried rice—packed with sharp chili heat and deep, savory oils—to classic home-style fried rice with a balanced mix of traditional ingredients. A smaller portion is also available, making an easy sidecar to noodles or stir-fried dishes.
High-heat stir-fries and smaller plates show off the kitchen's neighborhood-Chinese pedigree. Slices of tender liver come tossed with bean sprouts and garlic chives in a savory gloss, while sweet-and-sour pork pairs light batter with sweet onions and tangy sauce; both go hand in hand with steamed rice or a large bottle of beer or chuhai. Nicely blistered gyoza dumplings and wonton noodles in a soothing soy-sauce broth offer plenty of ways to round out the spread.
With counter seating and booths, the room accommodates quick solo lunches as easily as casual evening drop-ins. Especially around lunchtime, the space fills up as the staff works briskly to move orders along. Shoraku operates on cash-only payments and does not accept advance reservations, making it best suited for spontaneous visits when craving unpretentious comfort food.
